Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) Certificate of Achievement

Program Description

This certificate is designed to train students in the use of Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) often known as Arc or Stick Welding. Electrode identification, welding symbols, and joint design are stressed. Students working for certificates must have a basic knowledge of arithmetic, reading and writing in order to learn and work in the occupations they select.

The pathway below represents an efficient and effective course taking sequence for this program.  Individual circumstances might require some changes to this pathway.  It is always recommended that you meet with an academic counselor to develop a personalized educational plan.

Program Learning Outcomes

  1. Show an understanding of the safety precautions for working in a welding lab and demonstrate an awareness of the importance of safety in welding.

  2. Demonstrate the ability to read and understand Welding Procedure Specifications to produce quality welds.

  3. Demonstrate the ability to pass a Welder Performance Qualification Test with the SMAW process that meets the standard of acceptability for the City of Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety.
